46 Reviews Mentioning: weight

At around 10 pounds for a standard-sized pillow, Hullo pillows are heavy pillows. While it initially may be odd and surprising to those used to light spongy pillows, many come to love heavy pillows. Below you can read reviews from Hullo customers who mention the weight of the pillow.

Love at First Night!

The First night I used my pillow I noticed a huge difference.  Before my hullo pillow I was waking up with horrible head, neck, and shoulder pain. No more! With my hullo pillow I am able to adjust it to how high or low I want it. It is soft but firm as well. The noise of the pillow does not bother me at all. In fact I find it rather comforting. The one downside I can think of with this pillow is that it is a bit heavy, but that is it! For people who are side sleepers, back sleepers and stomach sleepers I highly recommend!

I would recommend Hullo to a friend.

Finally, a Pillow I Like

I haven’t woken up to a hot pillow in months now. I think I’d prefer a few more hulls in my pillow. It’s very firm which I absolutely love but it could be more firm for me. The pillow could be considered to be noisy by some when moving around. It doesn’t bother me and once I’m asleep I don’t notice it. It’s a very heavy pillow which has its benefits. My pillow doesn’t move around while I sleep now.

I would definitely recommend a Hullo for anyone who likes a firm pillow. Unless you’re an ultra light sleeper you won’t be disappointed. Like I said in the beginning,

No More Hot Pillows!!!

I Love My Sack of Grain

I got a buckwheat pillow for me and my partner. The pillow didn’t kill their snoring entirely, but snoring is down 90% at least. The sound has gone from a drowning water buffalo to the rumble of a old car in far in the distance. I can tune it out and sleep. For me, I don’t wake up with neck pain anymore, and I only have to sleep on one pillow. As an added bonus, my pillow is now so heavy that my kid can’t steal it off the bed for pillow forts.

It took a little getting used to, and the pillow had a faint smell at first, but as someone who gets migraines from strong smells I can attest that it wasn’t strong and didn’t smell bad. To me, it smelled like black tea, almost. I never in a million years would have thought that sleeping on what is essentially a sack of grain would improve my sleep so much, but it absolutely has.

You should absolutely get one, as long as you don’t intend to use it for pillow fights.

Great, Supportive Pillow

This is a a firm pillow that takes a few days to get used to.  When it first arrived I was surprised by how heavy it was.  It was also very firm to the point where I thought that there was no way I would like it.  In the box is a paper that tells you how to use it (weird, it’s a pillow, I’ve been using a pillow my whole life).  The card was right, fluff it up, lay your head on it, give it a few days to get used to it, definitely don’t use it with another pillow.  This is a great pillow, but you need to give it a chance.  I use to wake up with headaches or neck pain, especially if I used more than one pillow to try to get some support.  In the few months I have had the Hullo, I have not woken up with pain, and I have slept great.  Also, it stays cool.  You don’t have to flip the pillow in the night.  Buy one, try it, you’ll probably love it.

Basically as Advertised, Which is Good

I’ve had my buckwheat pillow for about 5 months now. You have to add or remove material a few times to get the balance right, but it’s worth it.

Things people complain about, but I don’t find bad:

Smell – detectable but not intrusive at all.
Noise – a bit annoying for major adjustments/the first of the night, but for minor adjustments or just while your heads on it, not bad at all.
Weight – definitely heavier than I expected, but I kind of like that.

Things people say are good, but I think aren’t perfect:

Shape holding – pretty good, but tossing/turning will change it minorly throughout the night.
Temperature – it’s not actively cool to the touch, but I think only once has it gotten “too warm” in 5 months.

I think those imperfect properties are probably inherent to a buckwheat pillow, and not a fault of Hullo in particular. I’m overall very satisfied with it.

Heavy, but Adjustable

I love this pillow and recommend it for the eco-conscious.

I really disliked the thought that something I’d sleep on for a few years would end up in a landfill for 500 years. So I decided to try this.

It is heavy. This helps me keep it on my side of the bed, and thus keep my head on my side of the bed. (It was not uncommon for me to have my pillows *off* the bed.) However, moving the pillow or getting it in the pillow case can be a bit more work than you’re used to, as it is 13 pounds (5.8kg). You can adjust the weight by removing some or all of the hulls. If you live alone and have arthritis or other impairment, just know it might be a bit of an adjustment.

It is loud compared to other pillows, but it’s still quiet compared to everyday sounds. And, of course, it’s only noisy when you move.

There is a bit of firmness, but it’s also adjustable. I think it’s great as is.

While there is a premium price for this product, it is a quality product, and it’s the best pillow I’ve ever owned.

Adjustable Support

I am very happy with my buckwheat pillow. I am a back sleeper and appreciate being able to shape the pillow to support my neck.  I took out some of the buckwheat filling but will save it for possibly replacing. The only draw back to the pillow is the weight. I bought the full size pillow so that it matches other pillows on my bed and it is heavy but worth it for the comfort. I would recommend this pillow.

5 Years Strong

I heard about this pillow years ago on a podcast with John Gruber and made an impulse purchase that changed my sleep. I have had my Hullo pillow for over 5 years and it has held up very well and is used every night.

I have now started to feel the need to add some hulls, but this is the first time I have needed to since owning it.

My wife and son are jealous of my pillow and I plan on getting them their own when I order more buckwheat for my pillow.

For some this pillow may feel heavy, so you may want to try the smaller version if that is an issue. You may also hear that the buckwheat hulls can seem loud. I had this same reaction at first, but after a few nights i didn’t notice the sound anymore; now it’s kind of soothing.

Thank you for making this product, it has changed how I sleep.

Can’t Believe I’m Sleeping on Buckwheat but I Love It

I love this pillow. Can’t believe I took the plunge but I really love it. I was worried it would be “noisy”, it’s not.

I don’t have to do weird things at night or figure out where to put my hand or tuck the pillow under my head “just so” anymore. Also, it’s great for reading in bed because it doesn’t “collapse” like other pillows do.

I didn’t want to spent the $ on the King size pillow so I’m using a standard on my King size bed and that’s fine. Plus the larger pillow would’ve been super heavy.

I Like This Pillow

I was looking for a pillow to help with my hot head problem. Had a pillow that is national advertised to help keep you cool at night. For me, I was still awaking up five or more times to flip to get the cool side up on that pillow. Internet searches on restless sleep and remedies for it led me to buckwheat pillows and I liked this pillow from the many I found. It took a few nights testing to find the correct amount of buckwheat needed to get the comfort I liked. Now that I have achieved it, it is heaven sleeping on it. Now I may wake up once to relocate to a cool part, but that is rare now. Also, if you are ever in a pillow fight remember that this is a Dirty Harry’s 44 magnum pistol of pillows so be careful. Next in the morning as you are making your bed you can get in a little kettle bell training with this pillow for how much heavier it is of your other pillows on the bed.

Excellent After Quick Adjustment Period

At first, it was a strange and new feeling (and sound) rolling around on my new pillow at night. I was worried I wouldn’t get used to it and would find it distracting. This quickly passed. I am 100% committed and happy with my Hullo and I want to take it with me when I travel! Add or subtract the buckwheat filler until the pillow thickness is perfect for you; then, once you settle in for sleep, the pillow takes the shape you need and holds that shape. It is heavy, so when you are selecting your size, keep in mind that it’s not as easy to move as you might like (for example, when sliding toward my partner in the center of the bed vs when scooting off to give her some space). If you’re on the fence, just give it a try. I really do recommend this product.

Wish I had Tried this Sooner!

Love my Hullo. Unlike any other pillow I’ve tried, I can shape it just to the right height and comfort, and then it STAYS PUT. My head doesn’t sink in gradually, and I finally can get the support I need as a side sleeper, and have it stay put all night. I wouldn’t recommend this for back sleepers, but for me it has been the pillow I have always needed but never had. I also love that the filling level can be adjusted, and that the filling contents are compostable if i ever need to replace them—so tired of all the plastic filled pillows.

Also, for anyone wondering about size, I got the small, and I’m super glad I did. It’s just the right size, and supports my head perfectly without having a lot of extra pillow sticking out everywhere. Standard size pillows would always get in the way of where i wanted to put my arms when side sleeping, but the small doesn’t have this problem. I also think the standard size would be harder to adjust and heavier to move around, but the small is perfect. Only downside is it is harder to find pillow cases for, but it fits pretty well sideways in a standard size pillow case with the empty half of the pillow case tucked under the pillow.

Goodbye Stiff Neck

I was waking up with a stiff neck more and more. Did lots of research and settled on the Hullo. Glad I did. It’s supportive but also incredibly comfortable. I also love the weight.

Great Pillow!

I love the size. Most other companies that make buckwheat pillows don’t have large ones (because they’re so heavy?). I’ve slept better than a lazy cat since getting my Hullo pillows!

Heavy But Comfortable

It is a heavy pillow but comfortable. It’s cool feeling and the hulls shape to the contour of your neck and head. I’m a stomach sleeper and I’m real comfortable with the pillow. I have tried many other pillows but I like the Hullo the best.

Just Wow… but Give It Time!

After a week I was ready to send this pillow back, my neck felt stiff and sore-ish, (not bad, but not awesome) but I REALLY liked that it doesn’t sleep hot!! So I decided I’d give it another week or two and I’m glad I did! I think my body, neck & spine needed time re-adjust to being PROPERLY aligned while I slept. It really does support my head a neck perfectly and keeps it shape and doesn’t smooshe down or lose its shape!! At all!  No need to fold and stuff pillows under your head or shoulders when you are a side sleeper!!  It also has a nice, earthy scent. Weird, I know!  The only negative I have with this pillow is that it’s heavy, which is unavoidable based on materials used!  It’s not a big deal, but I can’t hold it under my chin when I put a clean pillowcase on!!  Ha ha!

Years-Long Hullo User

I could sell these all day long. It’s like a mold around your head and neck. Sometimes if I get up in the night I might push on the hulls a bit and they just fill in the “neck gaps”, again, like a mold. Yes, the pillow is heavy’ish and it has some sound to it, but it’s the best pillow I’ve ever had. I’ve been using one for years and feel the same way. Just recently bought the smaller travel pillows (my partner feels the same way) so that’s why I got a review request. People who complain that it’s hard as a rock need to take out of the hulls. They are malleable so they naturally push down in, but you may have to take some out. I guess it’s not for everyone, but if you end up loving like we do you’ll be so glad you bought it.

Greatest Pillow

Greatest comfort sleep pillow I have ever owned or used! A bit on the heavy side (not a discouraging comment). I have sleep issues, sleep on my side, and the position of my head and neck need full support. This pillow provides that and allows more sound restful sleep. I enjoy this pillow. Thank You

Just So-So

It is just ok.  It is very heavy and it is a large ball when I wake up each day.  I will use it off and on probably.  I will keep looking for my perfect pillow.  Would not recommend to friends.

Closet Full of Unloved Pillows

I have consistently used one  (foam with neck support) pillow since 1995.  The maker of my old pillow is out of business now.  I can not even count all the pillows I have tried until Hullo!

I have the king size Hullo pillow and after a few nights, finally threw out my pillow of 25 years with confidence that I had finally found the perfect fit.   I have had this pillow for three months and love it.

The pillow is heavier than I expected but does not slide around on my bed.   I am a side sleeper and the hulls  allow me to flip from side to side without loss of support.   I sometimes sleep with my arm under my pillow and have no alteration in comfort.  The hulls allow you to customize the height of the pillow under your neck.   They do produce a slight noise but I don’t even notice it anymore.

I wake up less during the night and have had significantly less neck pain.   It is also cooler than others that I have tried.

Thank you Hullo from one very grateful Registered Nurse.

Good Thickness, Doesn’t Go Flat When You Sleep on It

If you move around a lot in bed, constantly switching sides, then this pillow will tend to get harder. If you lay still for the most part, you shouldn’t have any trouble, but as someone who tosses and turns, the pillow is usually somewhat hard and flat by the time I wake up. That being said, it’s still my favorite pillow.

You’re not paying for cotton, feathers, or foam. You’re paying for a surprisingly comfortable bean bag designed with the head in mind. This is a premium pillow at a less-than-premium price.

So, what are buckwheat hulls? I don’t know, but they are so light in weight, that if you hold some in your hand and blow on them slightly, they will fly out of your hand. The closest thing I can compare them to is the thin, brown, plasticky material you pull out of your teeth after eating popcorn. The pillow, however, is pretty heavy, considering I just ordered the small one. That’s probably because of the shear quantity of material inside. The fabric that houses the hulls is very nice-feeling and relatively thick, too, and the zipper is very robust, so you shouldn’t have to worry about the hulls spilling out.

You can’t really prop up the Hullo to become a headrest to watch TV or use your phone in bed with the small pillow because it likes to abide by the laws of gravity. If you place it upright, it becomes a burrito shape, but if you keep it flat, it stays a pillow shape. I use a different pillow for sitting up. Bottom line: it’s a really good pillow, and a unique one at that. If you don’t like it, you can return it before 60 days.

I used a promo code for free shipping to order the small Hullo pillow. The medium is probably much better, but since the pillow retains its thickness throughout the night, there’s no need for me to upgrade, personally. The main reason why most people think they need a BIG pillow is because they want a thick pillow. As a wise man once said, it’s about the girth, not the length.

Great Pillow

My Hullo pillow was recommended to me by a physical therapist that I’d been seeing for neck issues.  While I still have some ongoing issues with my neck, my pillow has helped a lot.  I like to sleep on my side, so find it very comfortable and the fit is right.  I did have to take some of the hulls out as it was too full, but that’s simple to do and it made it a much better size/fit for me.  Great pillow, but you should know, that it’s heavy!  The material is well made and appears to be of a very high quality.  I definitely recommend it.
