A buckwheat pillow is a cool pillow because buckwheat is breathable, allowing air flow. Modern cool pillow gimmicks such as water, foams and gels don’t work as well as natural buckwheat, simply because they do not breathe as well.

Will Never Use Anything Else

I rarely wake up with stiff shoulders / neck in all the years I’ve used to type of pillow. It’s cooler, keeps it’s form until you change it and is excellent for helping me sleep better. I even took it to the hospital when I was in for 8 days because the ones provided were polyester filled and I couldn’t get comfortable; the fill kept sinking and caused me neck stiffness on the first night. Even tried memory foam types but they were very hot and not very pliable to move around the way  the ones I made with these hulls are.

I’ve recommended this site to several people through the years and all have been converts to switching over from their usual type to the buckwheat hulls. These also last much longer so are cost effective versus replacing flattened other fill pillows.

I would recommend Hullo to a friend.

Read the 60 Night Trial Prior to Purchasing if You Aren’t Sure You’ll Like It

Pros:

  • Pillow arrived exactly as advertised within a few days from shipping
  • Plenty of filling in the pillow, and the pillow casing itself seems to be made of good quality
  • Pillow stayed cool throughout the night

Cons:

  • Most uncomfortable week of sleep in my entire life, woke up with horrific neck and back pain. Removing hulls each night helped slightly, but even with the pillow at 1/3 of its initial loft, it was extremely firm.
  • Refund policy. Although they offer a 60 night trial window, when you purchase the pillow it states:
“If you are not satisfied with Hullo for any reason, send it back to us and we’ll refund your purchase. No questions asked.”This wording is different than the wording on the 60 Night Trial page which states:
“Shipping charges for returned products are the responsibility of the purchaser and are not covered by our free shipping policy.”

If I had read that page first and known that the refund would be minus the return shipping cost, I would have purchased a buckwheat pillow from another company that had a more favorable return policy. I would have appreciated the return/refund policy being clearer, but I suppose that is my fault for not reading the 60 night trial page prior to purchasing.

TLDR:
It is exactly as advertised and feels like sleeping on a pile of sand or a beanbag, as others have mentioned. For $90+, consider putting your head on a beanbag or sandbag for a few nights and see if you like how that feels before purchasing. Be sure you read the entirety of the 60 night trial page so you are aware of the terms.

Finally, a Pillow I Like

I haven’t woken up to a hot pillow in months now. I think I’d prefer a few more hulls in my pillow. It’s very firm which I absolutely love but it could be more firm for me. The pillow could be considered to be noisy by some when moving around. It doesn’t bother me and once I’m asleep I don’t notice it. It’s a very heavy pillow which has its benefits. My pillow doesn’t move around while I sleep now.

I would definitely recommend a Hullo for anyone who likes a firm pillow. Unless you’re an ultra light sleeper you won’t be disappointed. Like I said in the beginning,

No More Hot Pillows!!!

Life Changing!

I love how cool and supportive Hullo is. I am now a person who travels with their pillow, sleeping on anything else just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Great, Supportive Pillow

This is a a firm pillow that takes a few days to get used to.  When it first arrived I was surprised by how heavy it was.  It was also very firm to the point where I thought that there was no way I would like it.  In the box is a paper that tells you how to use it (weird, it’s a pillow, I’ve been using a pillow my whole life).  The card was right, fluff it up, lay your head on it, give it a few days to get used to it, definitely don’t use it with another pillow.  This is a great pillow, but you need to give it a chance.  I use to wake up with headaches or neck pain, especially if I used more than one pillow to try to get some support.  In the few months I have had the Hullo, I have not woken up with pain, and I have slept great.  Also, it stays cool.  You don’t have to flip the pillow in the night.  Buy one, try it, you’ll probably love it.

Perfection

I bought this pillow upon a recommendation from my brother. Amazing pillow overall. It certainly allows me to sleep better every night on a cool surface instead of a hot pillow. Highly recommend it!

Top-Tier Pillow

The best neck support that I’ve found yet (and I’ve tried A LOT of pillows). The buckwheat fill makes the pillow endlessly adjustable, cool, and supportive. The materials are consistently high quality. Note that if you share a bed the gentle rustle of the buckwheat fill can rouse a very light sleeper.

Basically as Advertised, Which is Good

I’ve had my buckwheat pillow for about 5 months now. You have to add or remove material a few times to get the balance right, but it’s worth it.

Things people complain about, but I don’t find bad:

Smell – detectable but not intrusive at all.
Noise – a bit annoying for major adjustments/the first of the night, but for minor adjustments or just while your heads on it, not bad at all.
Weight – definitely heavier than I expected, but I kind of like that.

Things people say are good, but I think aren’t perfect:

Shape holding – pretty good, but tossing/turning will change it minorly throughout the night.
Temperature – it’s not actively cool to the touch, but I think only once has it gotten “too warm” in 5 months.

I think those imperfect properties are probably inherent to a buckwheat pillow, and not a fault of Hullo in particular. I’m overall very satisfied with it.

Impulse Purchase That Worked Out

I bought a Hullo on a total impulse when I saw an advertisement for it on the listing for a podcast that I don’t even listen to. My wife and I most recently had gotten “pedic” brand cooling pillows and I wasn’t ever really happy with mine, so I figured I’d try something new and quirky. I already do other quirky things like unicycle and use words like “obsequious” online like people have any idea what I mean.

There’s nothing I can say about the pillow itself that hasn’t already been said in the product description and other reviews: those things are all true. Most importantly to my review, though, is to say that I was immediately surprised by how comfortable the pillow is to sleep on. It feels great when sleeping on my side, my face nuzzled into its cool-feeling surface. It’s not great at all when sleeping on my back, but I have a fairly thin foam pillow that goes over the top of the Hullo when I am sleeping on my back, and that works out great. I usually start the night on my back, with the foam pillow over the Hullo, and then part way through the night I switch to sleeping on my side and push the foam pillow out of the way and just use the Hullo.

If you’re weird and quirky and feel like a change of pace might be in order, you should try one of these out. Just know that the Hullo is about double the price you can pay elsewhere online for a buckwheat pillow, and that is why I have docked it one star. But I am relatively okay with this, as that extra money goes to podcast creators (in the most ideal context anyway). To be fair, I can’t speak based on experience whether the cheaper pillows are as nice, but as far as I can tell it’s just a bag full of buckwheat hulls, how much differentiation in quality can there be?

I Like This Pillow

I was looking for a pillow to help with my hot head problem. Had a pillow that is national advertised to help keep you cool at night. For me, I was still awaking up five or more times to flip to get the cool side up on that pillow. Internet searches on restless sleep and remedies for it led me to buckwheat pillows and I liked this pillow from the many I found. It took a few nights testing to find the correct amount of buckwheat needed to get the comfort I liked. Now that I have achieved it, it is heaven sleeping on it. Now I may wake up once to relocate to a cool part, but that is rare now. Also, if you are ever in a pillow fight remember that this is a Dirty Harry’s 44 magnum pistol of pillows so be careful. Next in the morning as you are making your bed you can get in a little kettle bell training with this pillow for how much heavier it is of your other pillows on the bed.

Wanted to Like it but it is Very Uncomfortable

I really wanted to like this pillow but it doesn’t stay cool and is very hard. I tried removing a lot of the filling but it didn’t help. Using it just because I bought it 🙁

Glad I Finally Got Around to Trying It

I have heard about buckwheat pillows for years but had never tried one until now. Last night was the 4th night of sleeping with my new Hullo Buckwheat pillow. I really like it. It takes a little getting used to, but I know I’m falling asleep faster, tossing and turning much less, sleeping better, and I’m not waking up with the usual pain in my neck that I’ve had for a long time, so I think I’ve found my pillow for life. I can’t say that it is significantly cooler to sleep on than other so-called “cooling” pillows I’ve tried, but with the right pillow case on it it’s not as hot as some others I’ve tried. I removed some of the buckwheat hulls from it so that it isn’t quite as full as it was when it arrived and I think that made it even better.

Helpful, but not Super Soft and Comfy

The product gets 5 stars for meeting expectations. The pillow is exactly as explained. I have cervical stenosis and arthritis and nothing will remove the discomfort. Still, the texture from the hulls places my head at a perfect height to let me sleep comfortably on my back. I tend to sleep on my side, and so the edges provide less support than I want, or need. When I turn, I wonder if the crunchy sound might wake my spouse—he says it does not. And if I’m sound asleep, it doesn’t bother me either. I also think the hulls allow a definite cooling, which is great. I miss the softness of hypoallergenic polyester, but not the plastic, and certainly not the head-in-a-hole feeling. The Hullo pillow does what it says. And the smell is very very very faint and pleasant.

I Won’t Use Anything Else

I first started using a buckwheat hull pillow over 20 years ago under a brand name. When it came time to replace them I found this site Hullo Pillow because I searched for just the hulls in order to make my own rather than pay over $70 each for a replacement. I bought the 10 lb bag of Hullo. I also bought smaller (may be for a crib but they’re slightly smaller than standard sized) zippered pillow cases and waterproof zippered standard pillow cases on another site. I wound up with 3 nicely stuffed pillows. It sounds like a lot of cases but my dog likes to lick pillows for some reason. I stuffed each small case with Hullo and then put into a waterproof case before putting all into my regular cases that go with whatever sheets I’m using.

At first they’re crunchy but you get used to that and it’s fantastic to have a firm and cool pillow under my head and shoulders that doesn’t shift or go flat as I move around. One little push or pull and it’s readjusted. No waking up to fluff and readjust like with poly fill, foam, etc. It’s also so much cooler especially in the summer time. These 3 new ones will last me a long time and I’ve recommended Hullo to several friends with neck and shoulder problems who have tried out mine and swear by using buckwheat pillows now.

My Wife Makes Fun of Me…

…but I sleep better than I ever have with my Hullo pillow. I was hesitant at first, I’ve never spent so much on a pillow before, but I go through a couple of pillows a year because they flatten out. At one point I was sleeping with 2 or 3 pillows to be comfortable. This is the last pillow I’ll ever buy! It is comfortable, stable, and stays cool.

I Use Just One Pillow Now and Don’t Have to Flip It

It did take a few days to adjust to the Hullo pillow. Now I use just one Hullo pillow after using 2 pillows for years. It doesn’t get hot (haven’t tried it through a summer yet) and the support is great. An unexpected benefit from the Hullo is that it provides wonderful back support when I sit up in bed (I put a big throw pillow on top of the Hullo for my head).

First Pillow I’ve Ever Loved!

I love that it holds it’s shape and stays cool. I no longer flip my pillow throughout the night to puff up feathers or get the cool side. The only small complaint I can make is that it’s louder than a normal pillow, but since I don’t have to continuously flip it it doesn’t bother my wife.

Wonderful Pillow!

I am so happy with this purchase that I brought one for a gift for my son!  I have enjoyed this pillow since the first night; it really does stay cool.  Having a pillow that is nice and firm is wonderful. Just like the description says, you put your head on it and it forms to your head and neck.  I started shopping for a new pillow because I was waking up almost every morning with a headache, since getting the Hullo the headaches have almost disappeared.  It is well worth the extra money to have a great purchase.  My son is also enjoying his and no longer has to flip to the cool side.

Just Wow… but Give It Time!

After a week I was ready to send this pillow back, my neck felt stiff and sore-ish, (not bad, but not awesome) but I REALLY liked that it doesn’t sleep hot!! So I decided I’d give it another week or two and I’m glad I did! I think my body, neck & spine needed time re-adjust to being PROPERLY aligned while I slept. It really does support my head a neck perfectly and keeps it shape and doesn’t smooshe down or lose its shape!! At all!  No need to fold and stuff pillows under your head or shoulders when you are a side sleeper!!  It also has a nice, earthy scent. Weird, I know!  The only negative I have with this pillow is that it’s heavy, which is unavoidable based on materials used!  It’s not a big deal, but I can’t hold it under my chin when I put a clean pillowcase on!!  Ha ha!

Sleep On It

The Hullo pillow is comfortable and provides better support than the synthetic filling pillows I’ve used in the past. I have’t used it through the summer yet, but it seems to stay cool without having to turn it over constantly. It’s definitely noisier than other pillows but that hasn’t been an issue now that I’ve gotten used to it. The only downside I’ve found is that since it’s essentially a sack of buckwheat hulls it can’t be neatly propped up against a headboard and it can look lumpy if you don’t flatten it out. Those are entirely aesthetic issues though and only matter if you’re particular about making your bed.

At Last, A Quality Pillow

The buckwheat hulls are supportive without cutting off blood flow, and do a good job of circulating air as well.  The pillow casing did not set off my chemical sensitivities, and is well constructed with a zipper meant for years of use including refills.  I’m so glad I invested in this pillow.  It’s a major life upgrade!
