Skeptical, but Pleasantly Surprised!

When I first received my Hullo, I was underwhelmed, to be honest. While the materials and stitching seemed to be top-notch, I didn’t think I’d like the pillow, because it was like a bean bag, and not like most pillows, which are more “fluffy”. However, after sleeping on it for several nights and “learning” how it worked, it all made sense. The pillow allows you to position your head in neck exactly where you want them and it holds this position all night – game changer! Just be sure to give it some time and understand what buckwheat pillows are all about and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised too.

As Promised

As other reviewers have stated, my pillow felt hard when I first started using it, but after getting the proper amount of fill correct I can adjust it “on the fly” while I sleep and enjoy it very much.

Hullo is a fine company with a great product and “more” than fair policies. A refreshing change from most of todays marketing hoopla!

Keep up the good work and great service.

Read the 60 Night Trial Prior to Purchasing if You Aren’t Sure You’ll Like It

Pros:

  • Pillow arrived exactly as advertised within a few days from shipping
  • Plenty of filling in the pillow, and the pillow casing itself seems to be made of good quality
  • Pillow stayed cool throughout the night

Cons:

  • Most uncomfortable week of sleep in my entire life, woke up with horrific neck and back pain. Removing hulls each night helped slightly, but even with the pillow at 1/3 of its initial loft, it was extremely firm.
  • Refund policy. Although they offer a 60 night trial window, when you purchase the pillow it states:
“If you are not satisfied with Hullo for any reason, send it back to us and we’ll refund your purchase. No questions asked.”This wording is different than the wording on the 60 Night Trial page which states:
“Shipping charges for returned products are the responsibility of the purchaser and are not covered by our free shipping policy.”

If I had read that page first and known that the refund would be minus the return shipping cost, I would have purchased a buckwheat pillow from another company that had a more favorable return policy. I would have appreciated the return/refund policy being clearer, but I suppose that is my fault for not reading the 60 night trial page prior to purchasing.

TLDR:
It is exactly as advertised and feels like sleeping on a pile of sand or a beanbag, as others have mentioned. For $90+, consider putting your head on a beanbag or sandbag for a few nights and see if you like how that feels before purchasing. Be sure you read the entirety of the 60 night trial page so you are aware of the terms.

Wonderful!

I love this pillow. It’s made a huge difference in my quality of sleep and in my neck pain. I love how adjustable it is. I removed a decent amount of the hulls to make it fit exactly how I needed it to. I will never use another pillow. High quality and wonderful results!

Top-Tier Pillow

The best neck support that I’ve found yet (and I’ve tried A LOT of pillows). The buckwheat fill makes the pillow endlessly adjustable, cool, and supportive. The materials are consistently high quality. Note that if you share a bed the gentle rustle of the buckwheat fill can rouse a very light sleeper.

Very Adaptable Pillow

I love my Hullo pillow! I am pretty picky about pillows. I like a pillow that’s firm but also malleable. Memory foam pillows have never worked for me because I can’t easily change the shape as I shift sleeping positions over the course of a night. I love how easy it is to reshape this pillow. I needed to take about half the filling out of mine to personalize it for my comfort, but that was very easy to do. The case is well made. The whole pillow feels clean and comfortable. It even smells fresh and clean. I wish I’d bought one years ago.

The Ultimate Pillow

We have used the buckwheat pillows since 1996 and they finally wore out. We browsed the Internet and we found the Hullo website.

We have purchased 2 of the queen size pillows and they are the real deal. These pillows do not smell or have any odor. If you have any doubt about these pillows, please don’t hesitate Purchase them. We have done some research and these are the best!

The Perfect Pillow

I love, love, love my Hullo pillow that I have been sleeping on for two months. My cranial bones located in my occipital area have been tender for many years. This pillow cradles my head perfectly. One might think that the hard buckwheat hulls would be uncomfortable however it’s quite the opposite. At first the pillows seemed a bit full for my liking but, the pillow has a nice zipper and I was able to remove 4 cups of hulls and that seemed to work well for me. I highly recommend this pillow and if you are unsure because of the cost it is completely worth it and comes with a money back guarantee. I also love that it is a Minnesota company, made an America:) Thank you Hullo.

At Last, A Quality Pillow

The buckwheat hulls are supportive without cutting off blood flow, and do a good job of circulating air as well.  The pillow casing did not set off my chemical sensitivities, and is well constructed with a zipper meant for years of use including refills.  I’m so glad I invested in this pillow.  It’s a major life upgrade!

1st thought…buckwheat pillow?…SOUNDS WEIRD…after 1st night…OMG I LOVE THIS THING!

OK let me start by saying I’ve never even considered a buckwheat pillow before.  I’ve either used foam or feather pillows in the past. But there is a point after so many nights of wrestling with your pillow you get desperate and are willing to try anything.

COST:
I would not call the buckwheat pillows from “hullo” cheap and I’m sure you can find bargain pillows online.  That being said my personal option is if I’m trying something different I want to try the best and get the clearest idea if it’s right for me.

QUALITY:
The quality of material from “hullo” is wonderful.  I don’t have any other buckwheat pillows to compare but I would say without question I’m totally satisfied with what they sell and can’t think of anything else I would want or expect.

FIRST NIGHT:
From my research on buckwheat pillows I had expected it to be a bit loud.  This is small hulls right next to your ear after all. But I have to say it really isn’t that loud and one thing to remember is it only makes noice when your moving around on your pillow not when your resting still.  That leads me to my biggest revelation with this pillow. After only a few minutes I realized…with a buckwheat pillow you literally are able to “sculpt” a custom pillow for your head every time you use it. With a buckwheat pillow every time you move you get a whole new pillow custom to you.

After the first night my wife said my snoring was almost zero. Everyone’s experience is obviously different but lets just say I was impressed…VERY impressed after the first night.

COMPLAINTS:
We don’t live in a perfect world and most things in life can be improved on.  In the case of the Standard 20″ × 26″ Bed Pillow I purchased from “hullo” I would say only one thing stands out as needing improvement.  The amount of buckwheat they provide in their pillows.  Don’t get me wrong it’s not like they rip you off or anything on the fill amount.  And yes, every customer is likely to have a slightly different amount of “ideal” fill.  All I’m saying is I wish they would provide you MAX filled pillows and explain to the user that you will likely need to remove some to reach your ideal fill. This would save your customers the extra $50 cost required for extra buckwheat filling.  Then again it’s a business and profit is required.

Just saying….hullo…if your reading this…and let’s be honest it’s a review on your own site…your reading it…please just consider erring on the side of caution and put more filling in your pillows:)

LAST WORDS:
Did I spend $150 (including my purchase of extra fill) on one pillow?  Yes I did…and I would do it again in a second!  I love my hullo pillow…enough to even write a lengthy review praising it.

Remarkable

Hullo makes a high-quality pillow. The buckwheat husks are uniform and clean. The pillowcase is exceptionally well made and sturdy. The ability to customize the pillow by removing or adding more buckwheat makes this pillow a great value. A welcome and loved addition to my pillow rotation, the Hullo has become my go to pillow.

Thank You Hullo

I love my Hullo pillow. It was a rather expensive but well purchased pillow, worth its weight in gold.   I have been having severe neck and shoulder pain.  It was so bad that I was actually screaming.  My neck is degenerative, and I had a huge knot across my shoulders. My doctor ended up putting me on muscle relaxers. I knew I needed more neck support for when I slept.  I have looked at so many different pillows online trying to figure out the one that I thought would suit my needs. I have several friends that have tried buckwheat pillows but did not care for them. What my friends didn’t tell me or couldn’t tell me which which buckwheat pillow they tried. One of my friends claimed about how noisy it was. After reading all the reviews and taking weeks and maybe a number of months, I decided to break down and get the Hullo pillow It was the best pillow purchase I have ever made. The first thing I did when I got it, was listen for the noise that my friends had complained about. This pillow had minimal noise. There’s no smell or odor. The casement for the buckwheat is superb. When I got my buckwheat pillow i opened it up because I wanted to actually feel buckwheat. It really surprised me because it is so soft. When I finally laid down on it it was like instant relief and support for my neck. The first night I slept on it my body did not move at all. Between my Hullo pillow and my weighted blanket, I have the best sleep experience. I also have Tourette’s syndrome, so this has been the a huge help. TS has caused much of my neck problems.  Thank you Hullo for helping me.

Would Recommend!

I’ve been sleeping on a buckwheat pillow for 10+years. This one is the best I’ve found. Casing is durable. Nice that the hulls are washed. Allergies much reduced over cheaper buckwheat pillows I’ve had in past. Love the zipper for adjusting fill or for washing.  I’m a side sleeper & this pillow had the right amount of fill right out of box.  Keeps my neck pain away.  If you are new to buckwheat, the pillow does make noise when adjusting during night.  Has never bothered my partner & doesn’t wake me.  Definitely recommend the Hullo pillow!

Won’t Sleep Without My Hullo!

From the night I received my Hullo, my sleep routine was forever changed! I’m a small, petite individual, so I opted for the smaller sized pillow for my first test run, and has found that this size works perfectly for me. I had no issue, or adjustment period as some reviews mentioned – I wasn’t bothered at all by the light sound of the buckwheat. The Hullo pillow truly cradles my neck. I create a little indent, then nestle in for a fabulous night’s sleep. I’ve tried a memory foam pillow, and botanical latex pillows that are a healthier version supposed to mimic down pillows. My Hullo is by far the most supportive for my neck, out of all pillows I’ve tried.

This felt like such a quality purchase. The packaging was modern, clean, and used an absolute minimum amount of plastic, just shielding the pillow itself. I also love supporting businesses who care about where they source materials from, create clean products for consumers, and who fully produce & operate in the US. I just purchased a Hullo for my mom for her birthday. I’m so happy with my purchase. Thanks Hullo!

Wanted It to Work for Me

I have had chronic neck pain for years and have been on the search for a supportive pillow for my neck and shoulders for about a year now. I put in probably 2 months using this pillow. I used it for about a month and when I continuously was waking up all night and in the morning with neck pain, I thought it was because I needed it to be firmer because throughout the night the hulls would move around so my neck wouldnt be supported. So I bought more hulls from the site. I added a decent amount to make it firm but it I was still waking up in pain. I had to switch to an old pillow actually because it was putting my neck and shoulders in worse pain than before. So I’m still on the search! I really wanted to love this pillow and raved about it before getting it. Even though it didn’t work out for me the quality of this pillow is amazing and would recommend it to a friend who may not have serious neck pain like me. On to the next!

Best Night’s Sleep

When buckwheat pillows came out years ago I had one and I loved it. But, I had to put it in a pillow protector because it was just dirty dust. That was one of the cheap ones, the hulls were not washed. I didn’t know much about these pillows back then. Oh how I hated to put this much money out on new pillows, but I bought one at a time. I would not give up my pillow. I had neck surgery and and the Hullo pillow  gives me support right where I need it. These buckwheat hulls are washed there isn’t anything on the inside of my pillow case. I can’t believe I had that other one. But one of the features that I love about this pillow also is the very good zipper and material that you use on this pillow. I can’t say enough. I’m very pleased and now that I have two I’m even super pleased.

Love My Pillows

I ordered the standard rectangular and the neck roll. Both of them perform as expected. The canvas covers are durable and there is ample hulls stuffed inside so you can take some out to set aside for later if you need to.

I Can Finally Sleep Again

This pillow is amazing. After having kids and now carrying toddlers around all day, my back and neck feel so stiff and sore. I suspect I have arthritis in my upper spine and neck and it causes me so much pain. I used to use the Hullo and I loved it. We recently moved, and my Hullo pillow got packed and misplaced in the move. Since then my pain has been getting increasingly worse, to the point that I have insomnia oftentimes in the middle of the night and it is difficult to fall into a deep sleep. After finding and using this pillow again I can finally fall into a deep sleep and stay asleep. It is so supportive. I recommend bunching the Hullos into a supportive shape under your neck prior to falling asleep. This pillow is a life changer. I highly recommend! Also, I love that it is made in the US, organic and free of any of the toxic materials that are in most bedding.

Keeps Its Support

Great pillow, very high quality materials throughout. If you need head support without your pillow going flat after a few months this is the pillow for you.

I’m a side sleeper and kept having side neck and shoulder pain so I switched to the Hullo. Definitely better support and has improved my posture while I sleep by preventing my head from craning downward into my shoulder.

Should’ve bought the larger size but I couldn’t justify it for a pillow at the time, which is ironic because of how much we sleep. Will buy the larger size when I can afford to, the smallest size works just fine and will use when traveling.

Good Thickness, Doesn’t Go Flat When You Sleep on It

If you move around a lot in bed, constantly switching sides, then this pillow will tend to get harder. If you lay still for the most part, you shouldn’t have any trouble, but as someone who tosses and turns, the pillow is usually somewhat hard and flat by the time I wake up. That being said, it’s still my favorite pillow.

You’re not paying for cotton, feathers, or foam. You’re paying for a surprisingly comfortable bean bag designed with the head in mind. This is a premium pillow at a less-than-premium price.

So, what are buckwheat hulls? I don’t know, but they are so light in weight, that if you hold some in your hand and blow on them slightly, they will fly out of your hand. The closest thing I can compare them to is the thin, brown, plasticky material you pull out of your teeth after eating popcorn. The pillow, however, is pretty heavy, considering I just ordered the small one. That’s probably because of the shear quantity of material inside. The fabric that houses the hulls is very nice-feeling and relatively thick, too, and the zipper is very robust, so you shouldn’t have to worry about the hulls spilling out.

You can’t really prop up the Hullo to become a headrest to watch TV or use your phone in bed with the small pillow because it likes to abide by the laws of gravity. If you place it upright, it becomes a burrito shape, but if you keep it flat, it stays a pillow shape. I use a different pillow for sitting up. Bottom line: it’s a really good pillow, and a unique one at that. If you don’t like it, you can return it before 60 days.

I used a promo code for free shipping to order the small Hullo pillow. The medium is probably much better, but since the pillow retains its thickness throughout the night, there’s no need for me to upgrade, personally. The main reason why most people think they need a BIG pillow is because they want a thick pillow. As a wise man once said, it’s about the girth, not the length.

The Pillow Case Makes It the Best out There by Far

I’ve used millet pillows for years, but after awhile they start to flatten. The same thing will happen with Buckwheat as well. The main difference is the container that will hold the material. Weak zippers and no way to protect the zipper has been the main failure (for me). The zipper is robust on this and takes intention to get it to move. This is what is making me right now a believer in this company.
